A live wallpaper is wallpaper for mobile devices that is animated or interactive in some way. Most Nightscape Creations live wallpapers are fully rendered looping movie clips allowing you to enjoy ocean waves rolling under you, fog or mist roiling through a forest, or sunshafts streaming through the trees.

These animations will run at a full 30 frames-per-second on most modern devices, and support phones back to Android 2.x. Our live wallpapers are also designed to deactivate when hidden, so they will not drain your battery or slow your other applications when not visible.

The code used to create my live wallpaper was based off of an open source project accessible here. As part of the license I'm making my modifications available as well. If you'd like to create your own video live wallpaper, download the zip file here and follow the included instructions.

All of my images were done using Bryce (version 5.0 until 2008 and then 6.1) up until 2009 or so. Newer images and animations have been rendered with various versions of E-on's Vue. Most of my humans and animals come from Poser. Of course, no image or animation is ever left untouched by Photoshop.


All of my images and animations are subject to international intellectual copyright law. I grant visitors to this site the right to download my images for use as desktop backgrounds. If you wish to distribute my images or use them in any way commercially, please contact me about leasing non-exclusive rights to an image.

Rights are not always expensive. Whatever your desired use for an image might be, I'm sure we can work out some kind of agreement, whether you want to use something as a CD cover, a banner ad, a site theme, or whatever.


Like many others, I began my foray into desktop wallpapers with an image from Digital Blasphemy. I had spent my youth buried in video games, fantasy novels, and sci-fi shows. I loved the ideas presented, but in those days special effects could hardly do them justice. As a child I longed to be able to see a realistic reproduction of a dragon or deep space anomaly with my own eyes.

One day, around the age of 20, I came across a tutorial posted on DB about how one of my favorite images was created. I got myself a copy of Bryce shortly thereafter to give it a try, and created my first few images shortly thereafter. Despite my penchant for fantasy scenes, I began with mostly landscapes. The sky editor in Bryce provided so much power over the mood and feel of a scene, and I was often reminded of the sunsets I watched with my mother when I was a child. Nightscape Creations was born after my very first image as I dove headlong into the hobby.

Nightscape Creations went through several phases. Like many artists at the time I attempted to create paid galleries like DB had, but met with limited success. In the end I fell back on provided my work for free so more people could enjoy it, and tried to make a small amount of money from ads. Unfortunately, the site has never paid for its own upkeep.

In my mid-20s I took a break from Nightscape Creations, and most of my other hobbies, due to a divorce. I tried to get back to it once or twice in the following years, as you can see from the few images posted in the late 2000s, but it never seemed to stick. While I still enjoyed it I had a lot of other responsibilities weighing heavily upon me, and due to some other issues it just never felt as easy or natural as it once did. With so few people seeing my work, and my inability to get new images out fast enough to keep interest, it was hard to justify the effort at all.

In 2013 I was finally able to afford my first smartphone (don't laugh!), and I discovered live wallpapers. I had dabbled in these almost a decade earlier in Windows, but the desktop implementation was clunky and the selling process difficult. Now I could create wondrous animations, not just images, and share them with thousands without all the hours and dollars of advertising it once took. Further, I could post versions with extra features and easily earn a little extra money for a family trip to the beach, a little extra security, and some updated rendering tools. I began with an old image that was always a favorite: Orion Keys.

With its success I'm looking forward to continue creating new wallpapers, hopefully with day/night cycles and more interactive features as time goes on.

A static wallpaper is a simple background image that can be used on any devices as a background. They are called "static" here to differentiate them from live wallpapers.
